What Does a Flat Bag Making Machine Produce?

Flat bags — also called bottom-seal bags, open-top bags, or poly bags — are produced without a handle punch. Unlike T-shirt bags, flat bags are filled after production: food packaging, garment folding, parts containment, and document protection. LayerQuestar's flat bag making machines are optimised for wide-format and long-format applications that standard T-shirt bag machines cannot accommodate.

Decision Guide

Three Questions to Find Your Series

01
Is your bag wider than 700 mm?

If yes → MF Series. The 2LR series maximum single-lane width is 700 mm. Only the MF-1000 and MF-1200 can accommodate bags above this width.

02
Is your bag longer than 1000 mm?

If yes → MF Series. The 2LR series maximum bag length is 1000 mm. MF series handles up to 1500 mm length across all four models.

03
Do you need dual-lane output to maximise throughput?

If yes and bag width ≤ 400 mm → 2LR-500 or 2LR-600 (dual lane). If bag width is 400–700 mm → 2LR-700 or 2LR-800 (single lane, high speed). If none of the above → MF Series.

"Dual lane" means two independent sealing and cutting stations operate simultaneously on one machine, each producing bags up to the stated per-lane width. The 2LR-500 and 2LR-600 dual-lane models effectively double output compared to a single-lane machine running at the same cycle speed. 2LR series maximum bag length is 1000 mm. For bags longer than 1000 mm, specify MF Series.

Build Standard

How LayerQuestar Builds Every Machine

Five hardware standards applied to every flat bag making machine that leaves the LayerQuestar factory. Verified by a 72-hour continuous factory acceptance test before shipment.

Heat seal bar close-up — LayerQuestar flat bag making machine precision sealing component

Precision Heat Seal Bar

Uniform temperature distribution across the full sealing width. PID temperature control maintains consistent seal quality across all four MF models, from 550 mm to 1150 mm sealing width.

Cold cutting blade close-up — LayerQuestar flat bag machine clean-edge cold cut system

Cold Cutting System

Clean straight-edge cut without heat distortion at the cut line. Cold cutting is essential for HDPE and LDPE flat bags where a heat cut would cause unwanted edge welding or deformation on the finished bag.

Photoelectric eye registration sensor close-up — LayerQuestar flat bag machine colour-code tracker

Colour-Code Photoelectric Tracker

Optical sensor detects printed registration marks on the film and automatically adjusts feed length to maintain precise cut position. Essential for pre-printed flat bags where logo and text alignment must be consistent across every bag in the run.

PLC and servo control system close-up — LayerQuestar flat bag machine control cabinet

PLC + Frequency Converter Control

Computer-controlled bag length adjustment with high accuracy. Frequency converter motor enables free speed regulation and energy saving. All parameters are set and monitored from a single operator panel with English-labelled controls.

FAQ

Flat Bag Making Machine — Common Questions

Answers to the questions buyers ask most often before specifying a flat bag making machine from LayerQuestar.

What is the difference between a flat bag machine and a T-shirt bag machine?

A flat bag machine produces bottom-sealed, open-top bags without a handle punch. The finished bag has a sealed bottom edge and an open top, ready to be filled after production. A T-shirt bag machine includes an integrated punching unit that cuts the handle hole into the top of the bag during the same production cycle.

The practical difference for buyers: if your bag needs to be carried by hand using a built-in handle, you need a T-shirt bag machine. If your bag is filled and sealed after production — food packaging, garment folding, industrial parts containment — a flat bag machine is the correct choice. Flat bag machines also support wider and longer bag formats than most T-shirt bag machines.

What is the widest bag the MF series can produce?

The LayerQuestar LQ-MF-1200 produces bags with a maximum flat width of 1150 mm (approximately 45 inches). This is the widest flat bag capability in the LayerQuestar bag making machine range and is specifically designed for large-format garment bags, wide industrial inner liners, and oversized retail packaging applications.

The four MF series models cover sealing widths from 550 mm (MF-600) to 1150 mm (MF-1200), allowing you to select the model that matches your specific bag width requirement without over-specifying machine capacity.

What is the longest bag this machine can make?

All four models in the MF series support a maximum bag length of 1500 mm (150 cm / approximately 59 inches). This long-format capability is consistent across the MF-600, MF-800, MF-1000 and MF-1200 regardless of the sealing width selected.

The 2LR series supports a maximum bag length of 1000 mm. If your application requires bags longer than 1000 mm, the MF series is the correct choice. Contact LayerQuestar with your exact bag dimensions to confirm the appropriate model.

Can this machine process pre-printed film?

Yes. Both the MF series and 2LR series are equipped with a colour-code photoelectric eye registration system. The sensor detects printed registration marks on the film and automatically adjusts the film feed length to ensure each bag is cut at the correct position relative to the printed design.

This is essential for branded flat bags where logo, text or graphic elements must be consistently positioned on every bag. The system works with film printed on a LayerQuestar flexographic printer or any third-party pre-printed roll stock.

What does "dual-lane" mean on the 2LR series?

Dual-lane means the machine contains two independent sealing and cutting stations operating simultaneously on a single machine frame. A wide film roll is fed into the machine and split into two parallel production paths, each producing finished bags at full cycle speed.

On the LQ-2LR-500, each lane produces bags up to 400 mm wide at up to 200 pcs/min, giving a combined output of up to 400 pcs/min from one machine. This doubles throughput compared to a single-lane machine of equivalent cycle speed, making the dual-lane 2LR models the most output-efficient option for standard-width flat bags in high-volume production.

What film materials are compatible with LayerQuestar flat bag machines?

Both series are compatible with HDPE, LDPE and LLDPE films, either as single-layer or co-extruded structures. The 2LR series additionally supports PP film. Film thickness range is 15–40 μm for the MF series and 10–100 μm for the 2LR series, reflecting the 2LR's wider application range including thicker industrial bags.

If you are producing your own film upstream, LayerQuestar blown film machines are designed to produce rolls that feed directly into the bag making machines without additional processing. Contact LayerQuestar if you are working with a non-standard film formulation or co-extruded barrier structure to confirm compatibility.

What upstream equipment do I need before a flat bag making machine?

The flat bag making machine accepts pre-wound film rolls as its input. The minimum upstream requirement is a supply of film rolls in the correct width and thickness for your bag specification. These rolls can be purchased from a film supplier or produced in-house.

For in-house film production, the recommended upstream sequence is: (1) Blown film machine to extrude and wind film rolls; (2) Optional flexographic printer to add branding and graphics to the film; (3) Flat bag making machine to convert printed or plain film into finished bags. LayerQuestar supplies all three machine types and can design the full line as an integrated turnkey solution.

How do I choose between the MF series and the 2LR series?

The decision comes down to three factors: bag width, bag length, and output volume priority.

Choose the MF series if: your bag is wider than 700 mm, or longer than 1000 mm, or you are producing garment, industrial or large-format retail bags where wide-format capability is the primary requirement.

Choose the 2LR series if: your bag width is 400–700 mm, your bag length is within 1000 mm, and maximising bags-per-shift output is your primary priority. The dual-lane 2LR-500 and 2LR-600 models are particularly effective for high-volume standard-width flat bag production.
