Wide-Width Blown Film

Single-layer LDPE or LDPE/EVA blend extruded through a wide-gap die head. Lay-flat width 1–2 m produces finished greenhouse covering 2–4 m wide when unfolded.

02

UV & Anti-Drip Masterbatch

UV stabiliser and anti-drip additives are introduced via a gravimetric masterbatch dosing unit at the hopper. No pre-compounding required — additive ratios are adjustable per batch.

03

Surface Winding to Large Roll

Film is wound onto large-diameter cores at controlled tension. Roll diameter and length are set by the operator. No slitting required — greenhouse film ships as full-width rolls.

ABA Three-Layer Co-Extrusion

Two extruders feed a 3-channel die head. Extruder A splits into both outer layers (silver LDPE); Extruder B feeds the centre layer (black LLDPE). One machine produces fully functional silver-black mulch in a single pass.

02

Mother Roll Then Slit

The blown film machine winds a full-width mother roll first. A recommended third-party slitter then rewinds the mother roll into narrow finished rolls at the target width — typically 0.8 m, 1.0 m or 1.2 m.

03

Black Masterbatch via Dosing Unit

Black masterbatch for the centre layer is metered by a gravimetric dosing unit at Extruder B's hopper. Concentration is adjustable without stopping the line — critical for consistent light-blocking performance.

01

Dedicated PBAT/PLA Line Required

PBAT and PLA blends process at 130–160°C — significantly lower than standard PE. A dedicated screw geometry and temperature profile are required. This cannot be run on a standard LDPE mulch film machine.

02

Low-Tension Winding Critical

PBAT film is more elastic than PE. Winding tension must be precisely controlled to prevent roll deformation and blocking. LayerQuestar's biodegradable line includes a dancer-controlled low-tension winder as standard.

Gravimetric Masterbatch Dosing System

All LayerQuestar agricultural film lines are supplied with a gravimetric masterbatch dosing unit mounted at the extruder hopper. UV stabiliser, black masterbatch and anti-drip concentrates are metered by weight — not volume — ensuring consistent additive ratios batch to batch. Dosing ratio is adjustable at the control panel without stopping the line.

Closed Loop

From Film Production to Waste Film Recovery

Agricultural film waste is one of the most significant sources of plastic pollution in farming regions. LayerQuestar supplies both the production line and the recycling line — enabling a complete closed-loop operation from the same supplier.

The Production Side

LayerQuestar agricultural film lines produce mulch and greenhouse film from virgin LDPE, LLDPE or EVA. PCR (post-consumer recycled) content from recovered agricultural film can be blended into the core layer of an ABA structure — reducing raw material cost while maintaining surface layer quality.

The Recycling Side

Used agricultural film is notoriously difficult to recycle — it is contaminated with soil, sand and moisture. LayerQuestar's agricultural film recycling line includes a dedicated washing and drying stage before pelletizing, producing clean PCR pellets suitable for re-entry into the blown film process.

Build Standard

Built for the Demands of Agricultural Film

Agricultural film production has specific challenges that general-purpose blown film machines are not optimised for. These five build standards address them directly.

Wide-Width Bubble Stability

Producing stable film at 1–2 m lay-flat requires precise air ring design and IBC (internal bubble cooling) calibration. LayerQuestar's die head geometry is optimised for wide-width agricultural film — not adapted from a narrower packaging film design.

±8% Thickness Tolerance

Thin mulch film (8–15 μm) is highly sensitive to thickness variation. Uneven film tears during mechanical laying equipment, causing field downtime. OMRON PID temperature control with ±1°C deviation under stable conditions is standard on every LayerQuestar agricultural film line.

Gravimetric Masterbatch Dosing

UV stabiliser concentration directly determines film service life in the field. Volumetric dosing drifts with pellet density variation. LayerQuestar's gravimetric dosing unit meters by weight, maintaining consistent UV loading regardless of masterbatch batch-to-batch variation.

Controlled Winding Tension

Wide, thin agricultural film is prone to telescoping and edge-weave during winding. LayerQuestar's surface winder uses a closed-loop tension control system — winding force is maintained constant as roll diameter increases, producing tight, stable rolls that unwind cleanly on laying machines.

72-Hour Factory Run Test

Every LayerQuestar agricultural film line undergoes a 72-hour continuous factory run test before shipment — producing actual agricultural film at target thickness and width. Thickness uniformity data from the test run is included in the shipment documentation.

FAQ

Agricultural Film Line Common Questions

Questions buyers ask before specifying an agricultural film production line.

What is the maximum film width a LayerQuestar agricultural film machine can produce?

LayerQuestar agricultural film lines are available with lay-flat widths from 1 m to 2 m. When the film tube is opened flat, this produces finished film widths of 2 m to 4 m. For greenhouse covering applications, a 2 m lay-flat machine producing 4 m wide film is the standard configuration. For mulch film, a 1–1.5 m lay-flat machine is typically used, with the mother roll subsequently slit to narrower widths (0.8 m, 1.0 m, 1.2 m) on a third-party slitting machine.

Can I make silver-black mulch film on a single-layer machine?

No. Silver-black mulch film requires a 3-layer ABA structure — silver LDPE on both outer surfaces and black LLDPE in the centre core. This cannot be produced on a single-layer machine because the two materials must be co-extruded simultaneously through a 3-channel die head. A 3-layer ABA machine uses two extruders: Extruder A feeds both outer silver layers (the die head splits the melt stream), and Extruder B feeds the black core layer independently. Attempting to blend silver and black masterbatch in a single extruder produces a grey film — not a functional silver-black structure.

How is UV stabiliser added to the film — is pre-compounding required?

Pre-compounding is not required. LayerQuestar agricultural film lines include a gravimetric masterbatch dosing unit at the extruder hopper. UV stabiliser concentrate (typically HALS-based, supplied as pellets) is blended directly with the base resin at the hopper in the correct ratio — usually 1–3% by weight depending on the required service life. The dosing ratio is set at the control panel and is adjustable without stopping the line. This approach is more cost-effective than pre-compounding and allows the operator to adjust UV loading for different seasonal or regional requirements.

What is the difference between greenhouse film and mulch film in terms of machine requirements?

The key differences are thickness, width and downstream handling. Greenhouse film is thick (80–200 μm) and wide (2–4 m open width) — it is wound as a single large roll and does not require slitting. Mulch film is thin (8–30 μm) and narrower — it is typically wound as a wide mother roll and then slit to finished widths. The blown film machine itself can produce both film types, but the winding system differs: greenhouse film requires a large-diameter surface winder, while mulch film production requires a mother roll winder followed by a separate slitting rewinder. The additive package also differs — greenhouse film requires anti-drip and anti-fog additives in addition to UV stabiliser.

Can I run PBAT biodegradable film on a standard LDPE agricultural film machine?

No. PBAT and PLA blends require a dedicated machine. The processing temperature for PBAT/PLA is 130–160°C — significantly lower than the 180–220°C used for LDPE. Running PBAT on a standard LDPE screw causes thermal degradation of the material, producing discoloured film with poor mechanical properties. A dedicated screw geometry with a lower compression ratio and modified barrier section is required. LayerQuestar's biodegradable film machine is engineered specifically for PBAT/PLA blends. Full specifications are available on the dedicated Biodegradable Film Machine page.

What EVA content is recommended for greenhouse film, and does it affect the machine?

Greenhouse film typically uses LDPE blended with EVA at 5–18% VA (vinyl acetate) content. Higher EVA content improves flexibility and IR heat retention but lowers the processing temperature window. At VA content above 12%, the screw temperature profile must be adjusted — particularly in the feed zone — to prevent premature melting and surging. LayerQuestar's agricultural film machine screws are designed to handle LDPE/EVA blends up to 18% VA content without modification. The OMRON PID temperature control system allows precise zone-by-zone temperature adjustment from the control panel.

Does LayerQuestar supply the slitting machine for mulch film?

LayerQuestar does not manufacture slitting rewinders. For mulch film production, we recommend a third-party slitting machine matched to your mother roll width and finished roll specifications. We can advise on the technical requirements — blade type, rewind tension range, finished roll diameter — and provide an introduction to slitter suppliers we have worked with on previous projects. [NEEDS CLIENT VERIFICATION — confirm whether LayerQuestar has preferred slitter partners to recommend]

Can used agricultural film be recycled back into new film production?

Yes, with the right recycling equipment. Used agricultural film is contaminated with soil, sand and moisture — it cannot be fed directly into a blown film machine. LayerQuestar's agricultural film recycling line includes a washing stage, friction dryer and degassing extruder that produce clean PCR pellets from collected waste film. These PCR pellets can be blended into the core layer of a 3-layer ABA mulch film structure at up to 30–40% content, reducing virgin resin consumption without affecting the surface layer quality visible to the end user.

What output rate can I expect from a LayerQuestar agricultural film line?

Output rate depends on screw diameter, film width and target thickness. As a general reference, a single-layer agricultural film line with a 55 mm screw produces approximately 80–120 kg/h depending on material and film thickness. Thinner film (8–12 μm) runs at lower line speed to maintain bubble stability, which limits kg/h output. Actual output for your specific configuration is confirmed during the technical proposal stage. [NEEDS CLIENT DATA — confirm specific screw diameter and output range for the agricultural film line]

How long does installation and commissioning take for an agricultural film line?

Installation and commissioning for a single-layer agricultural film line typically takes 7–14 days on-site, depending on factory readiness and local electrical connection requirements. The 3-layer ABA configuration requires an additional 3–5 days for die head calibration and layer ratio optimisation. LayerQuestar provides on-site commissioning engineers and operator training as part of the standard after-sales package. Remote support via video call is available for subsequent process adjustments after the commissioning engineer has departed. [NEEDS CLIENT VERIFICATION — confirm standard commissioning timeline]
